WHAT’S GOING ON IN HENDERSON, NV
Henderson is the second-largest city in Nevada, about 16 miles southeast of the state’s largest city, Las
Vegas. Lake Las Vegas, a 320-acre artificial lake, is located in Henderson. The township of Henderson
developed in the 1940s during World War II. Due to the establishment of the Basic Magnesium Plant,
Henderson quickly became the main supplier of magnesium in the United States. Magnesium was
considered the “miracle metal” of World War II. By 1947, magnesium production was no longer
necessary for defense, however; as a result, the majority of BMI’s 14,000 employees moved out of the
area and the population dwindled over the next few years. Supported by local industry, Henderson was
incorporated on April 16, 1953 as the City of Henderson and the city began to grow again. It is now over
94 square miles in size.
Henderson has more than 37 miles of walking trails and in 2007, Prevention magazine named it the sixth
most walkable city in the country. The city is served by four major highways: Henderson Black Hills and
(State Route 582), Lake Mead Parkway (State Route 564); Interstate 515 and Interstate 215. State Route
146 (Saint Rose Parkway) connects Interstate 15 near Sloan with Interstate 215 in Green Valley,
providing a connection to Henderson for motorists traveling in and out of Southern California.
Several respected colleges and universities call Henderson home. Nevada State College is a
baccalaureate college in the Nevada System of Higher Education and The Roseman University of Health
Sciences, a private university which awards degrees in nursing, pharmacy, and business, is located in the
city. The College of Southern Nevada, a community college based in Las Vegas, has a campus in
Henderson. California’s National University, Touro University Nevada, and Devry University also have
campuses in the city.
Residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of major shopping opportunities, movie theaters, concert
venues, dining venues, and casino resorts in Henderson. The city is also only minutes from the
attractions of Las Vegas and the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. The largest recreational facility in
Nevada, the Multigenerational Facility at Liberty Pointe is located in Henderson and the city plays host
to a wide variety of other cultural events, many of which are held at the outdoor amphitheater.
